Since you are using McIntosh tube gear, the first thing that popped into my mind, would be an efficient speaker.. Tannoy might be a good place to start. In fact, there is a member here at AA who make you an OUTSTANDING deal on a 25K pair of Tannoy speakers. I'll let him discuss his price with you. Speak to PHC1. I don't know if his speakers are still available, I would go listen to a speaker you already have an attraction to, then use that as your point of reference. That way you'll be able to identify the kind of 'sound' you like and that will then narrow the gamut of eligible speakers. Finally, take your time and enjoy the search. Good luck! |

I just realized that my bookshelf speakers in my bedroom are Sonus Faber. I like them better than my Linn Tukan in another room. I definitely will consider the SF.

William, here's my take.
Just like when someone is buying a new vehicle, one can buy a car, truck or perhaps, a unicycle. Point being, you must first decide which one fits your needs and then within the world of a car, truck or unicycles, narrow your choice down. As with speakers, you have direct radiators, horns (which are my personal predisposition), panel speakers... they all have pros/cons. Have you decided on what type fits you best? I personally love the outrageous dynamics of horns, including bass horns which are going to be huge speakers. Given that I've got horns that are around 109 db/watt, biamped and connected to a pair of Crown K2's, I can fill the room with dynamics and it's still effortless. The HF horns use 2" drivers so the distortion is essentially zero for home use. I also love the sound of panel/electrostatic speakers. I just can't live with their lack of dynamics. If you haven't done it already, I'd urge you to first consider the type of speaker (without regard to 'name') and try to figure out if speaker type A, B or C really floats your boat AND will accoimplish what you want in the space you want. We're all going to start naming those speakers which we typically own or have owned (and I'm no exception) I'm "right up the road" in Jacksonville. If you'd ever care to hear the Klipsch Jubilee, you are welcome to come to my place and hear a pair. They are currently the only pair in Florida (that I'm aware of). They're big. In fact, they're huge but... after getting into this hobby in 1978, these are the most incredible, dynamic speaker I've ever heard...so, I bought them. (well within your budget too!) |

I did not realize there are 3 main types of speakers. I wish Jacksonville was closer. I would guess its 6 hours away. |
