One of the frequent entrants to our local vintage sports car racing series is this beautiful Porsche 908/3.

One of Porsche's most successful racing cars ever, with a long competition history and racing pedigree, this car is still ridiculously fast, even by today's standards. This specific car was raced by none other than Porsche factory driver Vic Elford.

Yes, amazing car. Nicknamed "Flounder" as they called it...

It was at least 65HP down on the Ferrari 312PB but the titanium chassis and other weight savings supposedly made it the lightest in class. The car was really designed to win the Targa and the 'Ring'. It accomplished both if I recall correctly.

I saw it up close at the Naples FL. Revs Institute.

Check out this on-board video of a Porsche 908/3....this gives an excellent sense of just how fast, the excellent handling, and well-balanced this racing car was. Note that it just rips through the chicanes like they're not there.

Awesome video. I love how he starts coming up on the 550RS around the 1 min mark of the video. What a nasty little race car that was! That was when men were men to drive those things at those speeds.

No doubt the Porsche 908/3 was a legendary car but the Ferrari 312PB was no slouch.



The Ferrari 312PB is special for another reason too: it was Ferrari's last sports prototype before they exited sports car racing to focus their efforts solely on Formula One. They put the exclamation point on a long and storied history by winning the championship.

This Ferrari 512 M Changed the Racing World Forever


When the Sunoco Ferrari 512 M first appeared at Daytona in 1971 it was a revelation. Manned by a dream team that included owner Roger Penske, chief mechanic John “Woody” Woodard, and drivers Mark Donohue and David Hobbs, the car combined Ferrari’s pedigree with Penske’s legendary attention to detail in everything from his crew’s uniforms to the polished wheels. Slated to run at Daytona, Sebring, Le Mans, and Watkins Glen, this 512 M was the odds-on favorite every time the Penske team rolled it onto the starting grid.

In a historic run of bum luck, however, the car never won a single race.

Porsche 917 Shakedown for Rennsport Reunion V

The 917 gave Porsche its first overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. Powered by the Type 912 flat-12 engine of 4.5, 4.9, or 5 litres, the 917/30 Can-Am variant was capable of a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 2.3 seconds, 0–124 mph (200 km/h) in 5.3 seconds.

In 1966, the hot setup for the Can-Am was a T70 Chevrolet, winning five of six races during the year. John Surtees was the champion and Dan Gurney drove the only Ford powered car ever to win a Can-Am race.
