When did Ford produce its first DOHC V8?

Default Ford DOHC V8

https://bringatrailer.com/2018/04/26...-indy-dohc-v8/

“Ford’s quad-cam 32V Coyote V8 is a great motor–torquey, smooth, linear and with top end potential beyond even its factory ~7k redline. It’s a thoroughly modern engine, and in combo with independent rear suspension in the latest S550 Mustang, makes for a legitimate, world-class, high-performance sports car at a bargain price. This layout is nothing new to the Blue Oval, whose earliest experiments with a DOHC-per-bank multi-valve V8 date back to the dawn of the 1960’s, years before even the much better-known Cosworth/Ford DFV. The resultant engine powered Jim Clark’s Lotus 38 to top of the podium at the 1965 Indy 500, the first of at least 73 victories credited to the production 260-based unit prior to retirement.”

Right before WWII. Ford GAA. Technically it was a V12 aircraft engine cut down to a V8 due to shortages of the radial engine used in the M4A3 Sherman tank.

Yes the Sherman tank used a radial engine and it kept fouling the plugs something awful.

Ford GAA on the move in a 105 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M7 (M7B1)

It was a beast of an engine. 500HP at 2600 rpm and well over 1000 ft-lb torque at 2200 rpm. Oh and yes, some hot rods used them later.

You’re right, 1,100 cu in of a beast! Only 500 hp (because of its relatively low rpm), but well over 1,000 pound-feet of torque from idle to 2,200 rpm!

I only knew that from reading a book on the Sherman tanks in WWII recently

Yep. That was too easy. Aluminum block, early models were all gear/shaft with no chains. Later models made as much as 2000hp. The next one, other than experimental, was the Cosworth-Ford DFV that debuted in 1967. 3L & 400hp.
Interesting that Chevrolet also teamed up with Cosworth for their F-2 4cyl engine which they also put in the Cosworth Vega for a few years in the mid-70s. A fun little car.
