Right before WWII. Ford GAA. Technically it was a V12 aircraft engine cut down to a V8 due to shortages of the radial engine used in the M4A3 Sherman tank.

Yes the Sherman tank used a radial engine and it kept fouling the plugs something awful.

It was a beast of an engine. 500HP at 2600 rpm and well over 1000 ft-lb torque at 2200 rpm. Oh and yes, some hot rods used them later.

You’re right, 1,100 cu in of a beast! Only 500 hp (because of its relatively low rpm), but well over 1,000 pound-feet of torque from idle to 2,200 rpm!

I only knew that from reading a book on the Sherman tanks in WWII recently

Yep. That was too easy. Aluminum block, early models were all gear/shaft with no chains. Later models made as much as 2000hp. The next one, other than experimental, was the Cosworth-Ford DFV that debuted in 1967. 3L & 400hp.
Interesting that Chevrolet also teamed up with Cosworth for their F-2 4cyl engine which they also put in the Cosworth Vega for a few years in the mid-70s. A fun little car.
