I assume you feed HDMI 2 from the Oppo to the SP-3 and HDMI 1 directly to the TV, the recommended setup. My SP-3 serves mostly as a switch and as a signal processor for surround and HT. Stereo is served separately in a by-pass setup.

Yes, that's what I do. I am able to feed 4k to the Oppo (if I want to) and the Oppo processes it and feeds 4k directly to the projector via HDMI 1 (video). The HDMI (Audio) from the Oppo goes to the SP3. I do not know what the Oppo does to improve the sound. All that I know is that I get a much improved multichannel sound when I add the Oppo in the sound path. PS. I was reading a white paper put out by Oppo and it looks like the Oppo 205 has its own circuitry to improve the audio signals being fed via HDMI. Apparently it reclocks the signal and also lowers jitter. Like I said above, the resulting multichannel sound is much much better. PS2. Since I have multiple HDMI sources and the Oppo only has one HDMI IN input, I'm going to see if I can find a HDMI switch so that I can funnel all HDMI sources to the Oppo and feed the SP3 with the HDMI audio from the Oppo. If I find the right switch (4k, HDMI 2.0, etc.) that would also eliminate the need for the 4k board upgrade on the SP3. Last edited by nicoff; 02-02-2019 at 11:52 AM. |

I bought my SP-3 based on Kal Rubinson's rave review, and i do think it sounds superb, yet I slightly prefer the sound when by passing the front LR through a Parasound JC 2 BP to JC 1 monoblocks. It may be synergy between the JC 2 and JC 1, both John Curl designs. So for surround, it's HDMI to the SP-3; for stereo it's balanced analog direct to the JC 2.

I use an older Kinovo 4-by-1 switch. Although it is not rated for 4K, it does work with 4K. All our HDMI cables are 4K rated so that may be the reason. Apparently the Kinovo electronics has bandwidth to spare. Monoprice has some newer switches.

I do enjoy the sound of Blu-rays and SACD surround using the SP-3, although the front LR is passed through the Parasound JC 2 BP. The Blu-rays and SACDs are played on an Ayre DX-5 DSD connected to the SP-3 via its audio HDMI. Particular favorites of mine are the Legends of Jazz Blu-ray and the Arts SACD of Corelli Violin Sonatas Op. 5.

I've tried it, but I don't much care for the derived surround for stereo recordings.

Did you try it with all SP3 or with the configuration you are using?

For surround, HDMI from an Ayre player goes to the SP-3, and the SP-3 is set to cross the front LR speakers (KEF Ref 107/2s) at 40 Hz to Velodyne HGS-15s before bypassing to the Parasound JC 2 BP. For stereo, balanced analog goes directly to the JC 2 BP and the KEF 107/2s run full range without subs. The front LCR use JC 1 monoblocks; the surrounds are LS 50s driven by a pair of Parasound A 23s. Truth be told, most of my recent listening has been files streamed from Roon to the USB port of the Ayre. Charles Hansen envisioned steaming as an important future source, so a good USB port was a priority. |
