There are all kinds of sub-forums that touch many different topics.

They are all voluntary.

Some of the replies simply show how different the thought processes are in different countries. Everyone has a right to their own opinion as long as they don't try to impose it on others.

I always carry. Normally a 357 w/ laser. 9mm at times. My favorite though, a Wilson Combat 45.
New Zealand Police do not carry Firearms. A specialist division of the Police are called out to arrest armed criminals (The Armed Offenders Squad). Ordinary Police Constables do have access to weapons in an emergency - usually locked in the Boot of a Patrol Car driven by a Senior Sargent.

Your statement is laughable, they don't carry weapons, just stored in the trunk for an emergency.

Different country, different rules/laws. NZ seems to get along fine without armed cops.

If memory serves, most cops in western Europe do not carry side-arms, but I may not be up-to-date on that.

This would NEVER work in the U.S. Many criminals here steal guns. They carry guns. To place a police officer in such a position saying - oh let me go get my gun out of my trunk, etc. - would be certain death. Some cops here are outgunned already - criminals in many cases have better arsenals.

All true police officers in the U.S. are considered “specialists” with firearms (some more so than others). It’s part and parcel of the job.

I was also on SWAT. I was specially trained above what a normal police officer was. It saved my life many times.

I’m happy that New Zealand police can get away with less firearms training than us in the U.S. However as already mentioned, one of the reasons why we are allowed to own guns is to protect our other freedoms. We were once ruled by tyranny, but no more. Some of us are willing to die to safeguard these freedoms.

This is not meant as a political statement. Just a truthful one expressing our reality.

It is interesting to compare gun ownership, armed cops, etc., with the various countries.
One item JoeN brings up is the USA being ruled by tyrants at one point in our history (recall our War of Independence?). The irony of this is that had we continued to be part of the British Empire then slavery may well have been abolished peacefully 30-50 years before our Civil War and, like New Zealand, today the USA would be a wholly independent country. Entertaining to think about the "what ifs".
