Post covid and conflict/tariff influences on tubes made in Russia are resuming pre-covid availability yet at a rather slow pace.

Bob - a couple of folks on another forum are complaining that their McIntosh C2700 phono-stage is 'noisy'. What tubes would you recommend to help 'quiet' their phono-stage?

Well, without knowing much more than you mentioned, and assuming it only occurs when vinyl is at play, and all connections are tight and phono grounding is tight & secure, I’d say it’s a faulty phono tube (he/she could always swap whichever stage they are not using into the stage they are using, i.e., if using MC – take the MM 12AX7’s out and insert into MC slots). Just make sure all tube slots have a tube in them.

If it’s occurring with two different inputs – phono and say CD, and assuming the owner did mix up the slotting of the 12AX7 used for Input with the 12AT7 used for output it’s probably one of those. They could take an unused 12AX7 slotted in their phono and swap it with the 12AX7 input. If all is well, then it wasn’t that input 12AX7. If still noisy, then it’s the output 12AT7. Again, do not operate without all tubes slotted.

The C2700 has both MM & MC inputs and they are the 'two' inputs with the high gain and the noise. In my C22 (which I believe to be identical to the C2700 (other than all the balanced inputs, meters, DAC module, etc. of the C2700), swapping out the stock tubes for better tubes made a significant difference.
