Have been considering 845 SET amps, as well. But, as much as I like to 'tinker' I do not want something with the possibility of 900v, or higher, some how ending up on the chassis. The 450 that I got from a set of VTL monoblocks 25yr ago (back they went to the seller) that knocked me across the room (and it wasn't even my fault - I had yet to tinker) was more than plenty.

If more than one of us wants a pair of monoblocks perhaps we could do ourselves a favor by ordering as a group to make the manufacture of same more efficient and save some $$ at both our end and Dennis' end.

I imagine Dennis is chuckling right now.
Dennis has designed and manufactured tens of thousands of amplifiers with voltages ranging from 2000 to 7000 volts and producing 500 watts to 8000 watts of output power. 900 volts is child's play. What a hoot...

I could potentially be onboard with a group buy 845 set speaker amp depending on the price. I would ideally like something with more wattage that my 12wpc fire-bottle.

Line Magnetic has a nice 845+300b (LM-845 Premium) amp I've looked at before, but it's $12k.... something I'd never get.

decooney - sent you a 'visitor message'. Not sure how they work. If you and/or comzee are on the AK forum, I posted an 845 vs PP EL34 question in the tube forum over there. Some interesting comments on the 845 & 300B tubes.

Default Tube recs...again!

Hey, I sent Dennis an email a few weeks ago but haven't heard back. Proud owner of Inspire preamp and Firebottle amp. I'm going to give them one more try with my Altec 604's, with which they don't play too well, before I sell the Altecs. Would love tube recs for both pre and power amp but mostly pre. I have some KT150 for the Firebottle amp on the way; have cycled thru all of the other tube recs with no real improvement in woofer control.

Have a pair of red base RCA 5692 in the preamp now, which did in fact increase bass...but they also are very microphonic so the increase in bass came at a cost.

Any 6sn7 variants that anyone could recommend that would increase bass? Or any suggestions overall? Many thanks in advance.

I've tried a few 6sn7's in my AES preamp. The RCA tubes can have a loose mushy bass. Tungsol round plates have a leaner tighter bass with excellent detail but a pair can be pricy. The most abundant bass is the Ken-Rad 6sn7Gt but the top end can be not as clear.
Sylvania 6sn7GT produced 1951-1953 are excellent with great detail and a powerful well controlled bass. These are a few you could try.

One more thing on woofer control. The rectifier can also have as much effect as power and preamp tubes. It's worth rolling these as well. For 5AR4 the old Mullards have excellent everything across the board, bass, mids, treble. if you are using 5u4 the old Tungsol 5u4G's have very good bass. Best 5u4G for my Inspire SEP amp is the Sophia Blue glass and by a wide margin.
