If you take a look at this video and see what it takes to actually cut watch wheels by hand with a lathe "old school", you'll quickly realize that the 700,000 watch piece annual Rolex production for example is just not feasible with the old school technique. It's all automated now.

Even Chinese quartz movements are considered garbage by comparison. |

Japan and Germany are NOT Switzerland and by the exact copies I’d say even China has some skilled watchmakers just applying their skills with wrong ethics. So my point is still define “watchmaker” outside of the country or place he works.

By the way, Beijing and Shanghai watches factories as well as Parnis, Cadisen and a few others are reputable Chinese watchmakers with a few specializing in mechanical movements that are considered very good quality. Some use Japanese movements, some are copies of the ETA. Some have been around since the 1950’s but are mostly producing for domestic market. No surprise there since they are “homage” of some of the Swiss watches and you can’t step on the Swiss cartel’s territories.

I’ve owned quite a few IWC, Rolex, Pateks, Audemars and Breguets at one point. At the end of the day, with all the history, reputation and precision craft of the Swiss, they still couldn’t keep accurate time like any quartz movement can. Jewelry for the wrist? I’m over it

This Tourbillon is a cheap knock off, really not worth anything to me. To each their own.

There is PrimaLuna for $3000 and there is Audio Note Gaku on for $300,000 Both are tubes and both play music, there is no difference other than, I don't know exactly what but a blind test will not reveal much. |

For the record, my Grandfather, a watchmaker, schooled at Hamilton in Lancaster, Pa. taught me to respect and appreciate fine watches. As for your comment above regarding 'quartz', my Great Grandfathers 1888 Waltham Appleton Tracy still keeps excellent time, with it's original movement, lets see one of your quartz movements do that after 130 years ! |
