71 years today - SS Tripolitania sinks & my Grandfather & Crew rescued all 119 souls
Just by coincidence, yesterday and today (02/15/2024) I was looking for information on the internet regarding a clock & barometer plaque given to my Grandfather in 1953 by the rescued of the sinking SS Tripolitania.
My Grandfather, born in 1901 & immigrated from Denmark as a teen in 1919 with his best friend & worked in various shipyards in New York. With devotion and hard work & study he rose to become a ships Master years later; a position he held for remainder of his 30+ years in the Merchant Marines with the Military Sea Transport Service (MSTS) & later under the Army Transportation Service (ATS). When I was 10 or so, I recall him reminiscing the story of that day on 15 February 1953 when the ship received a distress call from the SS Tripolitania. I'll let a diary remark I found written by Eleanor Roosevelt say the rest: "About 250 miles off the coast of Sicily the Italian ship SS Tripolitania ran into trouble with a leak in her engine room. She goes on to say it was the “Muir” of the MSTS that took in 62 passengers & 56 crew, the ships master & even the ships dog mascot. Well Eleanor didn’t get it 100% correct - because there were 2 ships with the words “Muir” in its name during that time. The first was the “Muir Woods” an oil tanker (hull number T-AO-139) - but also a troop ship, which my Grandfather, Henry E. Olsen mastered/captained. That name is “General C.H. Muir” (hull number T-AP-142). In its service, the General C.H. Muir was transferred from MSTS to the Army Transportation Service (ATS) which was operated by civilian mariners- this is where Henry Olsen comes in. Later it was transferred & sold & renamed SS Chicago & later again as SS San Juan. So cool & very interesting - and get this - the rescue was 71 years ago TODAY. A check with Chelsea Clock Company, which is still in operation today, verified the serial numbers as authentic and was shipped out of the factory/store in New York on 27 February 1953. Eleanor Roosevelts' diary: https://www2.gwu.edu/~erpapers/myday...53&_f=md002507 Best to all, Bob

That's a great story about your grandfather! It's made all the better by you looking for details on the clock/barometer - the timing of it all would be "coincidental" only if you believe in coincidences.
