Rega makes very good TT's. Rega would be my second choice for a TT if I didn't have a Linn Sondek LP12. |

Chuck.......I believe the Pro-ject X-tension runs around $6K+ depending on which of the four arms is chosen. The phono cartridge of your choice is not included in that price. This is the Pro-ject X-tension in Olive Wood.
Pro-ject X-tension Linn Sondek's newest LP12 release with the Pro-ject 9cc budget tonearm, and Linn's Adikt phono cartridge can be purchased for around $3.5K. It can be upgraded with the Lingo power supply ($2K), the Ekos SE tonearm ($4.9K), the Keel one-piece subchassis, tonearm board, and tonearm mounting collar ($3.3K), which quickly puts it around $13K+. At $13K I would not be looking at Linn, I would be looking at the Basis 2200 Signature with the Vector 4 tonearm, Basis clamp, and the Calibrator Base. Yep. In your budget range, the P3-24 and the TTPSU power regulator would still leave you with $400 or $500 to invest in some new albums. I'm thrilled with mine.

Another sweetheart of a turntable is the new Thorens TD 550. At $12K plus cartridge, that would be on the list in the $13K price range.

From what I have read, a very smooth performer. Ortofon 12 inch arm is a great arm period - a steal for the price. I have the static model as my 2nd arm on my table. |

Listening to my MCD500 and my notebook computer as a music server with the sonos, using my iphone as a remote when I am outside has made me realize that listening to records is enjoyable the same way as going for a ride in a sailboat. It will never become my main mode of listening but will be on a more limited basis, therefore buying one of these higher end tt is not in my budget now. I will upgrade probably to something similar to the clearaudio performance as Serge has already done the research and seems to be very happy with his. by the way my AT440MLA replacement came in yesterday. I have not put it back on my TT yet. I am going to use the following TECHNICS BAERWALD ARC PROTRACTOR
as my guide instead of just the overhang adjuster that came with the SL1200. Last edited by 1KW; 07-04-2009 at 06:35 AM. |

David.......Glad to hear the AT cartridge replacement is in your hands. Good to know they took care of you.
No doubt, the Clearaudio Performance turntable is a nice one. Serge's seems to be performing very well with the Clearaudio Maestro cartridge. That would be a good way for you to go, and a nice step up from the Technics turntable. It won't break the bank, either.

Dan,
My dealer in Belgium says the Project X tension with the Ortofon arm is the TT to get at this time. He told me it sounds marvellous with an Ortofon Royal MC cart. I listened to it at a show in Paris. It was sounding very good, but I did not feel excitment. The record was not my cup of tea, neither the speakers. But it was fitted with the Project arm and I don't remember the cart. I think this TT really deserves a serious listening. Anyway, I listened for near 2 hours to Jean Marc's TT, the Clearaudio Champion level II, with Satisfy ebony arm and Symphony MC cart. I ordered the same, but now it's coming with the "CMB", a magnetic bearing suspension, which cost 1000 euros more. I took the MC cart Talismann, as the Clearaudio french importer told me that it has a smoother sound compared to the Symphony. I was looking for the Maestro, but the guy who seemed to be an expert on Clearaudio carts and TT's, told me it was absolutely inferior to the Talismann... As I could not hear any of them, I decided to trust him... BTW, the MC Talismann is about 300 euros less expensive than the MM Maestro. So I suppose his advice was the good one.... I'm very confident in buying a TT / arm / cart from the same company. I think synergy is really important here. I heared many TT's with great arms and great carts, not sounding that good. If i'm not happy with the Clearaudio ( I seriously doubt it, after what I heared at Jean Marc's house), I will sell it and will buy the Xtension, with the Ortofon arm and Ortofon cart ! Cheers, Jérôme ( PS : absolutely wonderful CD Dan, greatly revealing of both the dynamics and finesse ability of the C1000. You're a Chief ! Thank you very much )
