What I find interesting about opinions is they are always open to dispute. It matters not who the originator is, an opinion is a judgment that an individual holds as true. That an opinion is held as true does not necessarily mean it is the truth.

While ultimately not my ideal pairing, listening to Wilson Alexandria X2v2 driven by Krell Evo 900s was an eye opening experience to say the least.

Serge,
Krell may be the way for you to go in your home theater. You will have plenty of power, amps. that won't heat up your gear cabinet as much as the Lamm and it will take care of the issue of having similar power to all the speakers since they make a multichannel amp. It also helps that HI FI house is a dealer. |

Ummm...Krell amps put out so much heat that their btu output is listed on the specs.

I did not know Krell runs hot. My MC252, MC501's and yes the MC207 all run cool no matter how long I have them on or how hard I drive them. Do you see going back to Mcintosh as going backward Serge ?

The MC501s and other McAmps run cooler but when pushed can go into thermal shutdown as stereophile discovered in their 1/3 power pre-conditioning test with 501s. A typical user will not encounter those conditions though when listening to music. Yes, Krell is built differently, it is a brute into lower impedance loads and grabs any speaker by the b@lls but synergy is a bit more challenging. Do I think McIntosh is a step back? Depends... Very neutral or leaner speakers can benefit from the more forgiving McAmps. The truly refined and balanced speakers can use the extra resolution. Last edited by PHC1; 03-31-2010 at 09:51 PM. |

David.......Another way to look at it, McIntosh is very differently built from Krell, and runs considerably cooler by design. Their large power supplies are more than capable of delivering all the power necessary to operate faithfully at publish specifications with long term reliability. Negative feedback is a common engineering technique to reduce output distortion, included in Krell amps, as well. McIntosh specifications, which are worse case numbers, clearly demonstrate the success of the McIntosh circuitry. Active biasing can insure linearity of output transistors, providing the very complicated active bias circuitry remains stable and within specification. Some McIntosh amplifiers use active biasing, but it is designed into the transistor itself, and is called Thermaltrak. These types of transistors monitor their own heat, and self bias automatically without resorting to complicated external active bias circuitry. Yes, McIntosh amplifiers are built differently, and are quite capable of grabbing speakers anywhere they need to be grabbed to perform there best, and work wonderfully on truly refined and balanced speakers capable of the utmost in resolution.
There are many flavors of Kool-Aid. One can drink from whichever ice cold picther he chooses and find happiness.
