The British series (which was the original series, by the way) may be even better. The American series is a loose copy of the British BBC series with similar plot lines. The "villain" in the British series becomes The Prime Minister.

I was utterly captivated by the original British trilogy of House of Cards (House of Cards; To Play the King; The Final Cut) when it had aired on Masterpiece Theatre from 1992 - 1996.

Both versions were based upon three published works Michael Dobbs who himself held a number of political positions from 1977 - 1995 within the Conservative (Tory) Party under Margaret Thatcher and John Major.

In the British version, the leading role was masterfully portrayed by veteran Shakespearean actor Ian Richardson who will probably always be best remembered for his character of Francis Urquardt which was his last major role in a television series.

I will never forget the deliciously effortless way in which - after a coupe de gras - he verbally tears the King to shreds when demanding the latter's abdication:

"You have risked everything in opposing me; and you have lost...

...You represent nothing but one talentless and discredited family, and very soon you won't represent even that."

As enjoyable as the American version of House with Kevin Spacey is, it simply cannot hold a candle to the original BBC series.

One of the most gripping and amusing series I've seen in ages. Just when you think that nothing more outragious can be introduced, they seem to think of something else.

We watched the first two episodes of House of Cards Season 4 last evening. Picked up right where they left off last year. Promises to be a fun ride.
