Bill I read your review again and the two areas that held you back are two areas that are now making it shine for me as well as a few of the other guys. My soundstage is different on every recording. I actually can now hear the difference between my 24/192 and red book. It's not as subtle as I thought either. The sibilance your spoke about isn't in my system at all. That really comes up on Jackson Browne recordings and it's gone. I have about 400 hours or so at this point. It keeps getting a bit better daily. Would love to talk off line sometime if you want. Feel free to PM me. Pete

Sounds like I should contact my dealer and borrow his unit one more time.
I do think that some of my sensitivity to sibilance and harshness is due to living with a Wadia DAC of some type or another in my system since 1992. :-) |

Bill, I loved the Wadia DAC's. My dealer sold them and I had one in my system for years that was a 'loaner'. I owned the Krell Stealth (still have it and am going to try and move it as the market is still there for it as it's in cherry condition), but the Wadia was just so much better in all aspects.
All I know is that my unit now has well over 500 hours and I just don't get that sibilance at all. I played a lot of piano music as well as some hot recordings I have and the QX5 is just musical. Not in a rounding the notes way as it's actually giving more detail that I've had in the system. I have spoken to a couple of folks (and a couple on this board did the same thing and then realized the QX5 needed the warm up) and if you borrow from a dealer, you need to really turn it on and let it stay on for a couple of days. That's why they have the standby buttons on the Ayres. I don't understand thermal temps of equipment, but it seems to make a huge difference with Ayre gear. I even turned it off from the rear power switch and let it cool for a half hour. Turned it back on and I wasn't happy. It took nearly a day to sound it's best again. Just what it is, but it's not a problem when it's in the home as it's always on and ready to come out of standby at any time. Who knows, you may still not like what you hear. Happens all the time in audio as we all know.

Just picked up a gently used VX-R Twenty for 7700. Looking forward to hooking it up to my KX-R Twenty which I just got in a couple of days ago. Now all I need is the Twenty Dac....almost in Ayre Bliss.

Awesome. Good for you. Sounds like a great deal on the amp for sure. I was going to go the separate route as that amp is OUTSTANDING. Loving my QX5/20 right now, lol. Soon for you I'm sure.
