Number one spot is Smart for Two. I'd have to agree. In our country that is still full of SUVs and 18 wheelers barreling down the freeways at speeds in excess of 80mph, I for one would not feel comfortable in one of those little match box death traps. If I needed to get over 35 mpg, I'd rather drive a diesel BMW 3 series and feel much safer in it.

Here is a crash test of the Smart. Keep in mind these tests are done at only 30 mph. It bounced around like a little tin can. YouTube - Crash Test: 2008 Smart Car ForTwo

I'm not surprised. My kids have Hot Wheels cars that look more safe then those "Smart Cars." Every time I see one I want to try and tip it over.

The only way I would drive a Smart Car is if it was equipped like this, and then only in the dirt.

If transportation was purchased on crash tests, not many people would buy a motorcycle. Motorcycles are very safe, up to the point of impact.

Wow!!! There were some areas there that did not have the solid do not cross line. There is little chance that someone trying to pass coming from the other direction would have seen him that low to the ground. Wow.

I remember a long time ago when Car & Driver did a test drive of a Yugo. That was the only time I can recall them working in the word "sh!tbox".

I have to disagree. I used to own a Smart for two and I still regret selling it. For interstate highways I can see how it can be daunting to sit in it but you actually sit higher than other normal passenger vehicles.

It had lots of space for me (130kg+) and my passenger and was great for commutes when you don't need a lot of luggage space, although I could fit one large suitcase behind the seats. Yes the gearbox was not very good but once I adapted to its driving style (with or without paddles) it was fine. Anyhow the new gearbox is fine.

If you need a city car for two and a bit of luggage space I don't think it can be beat imho. 40mg??? I was doing about 55mpg easy.

It is sad to see that an innovative car like the smart being top of the list when there are so many crappy cars (mostly American) which aspire to be good cars but fall way short e.g. Cadillac Escalade, Ford Excursion, all Saturns, all Chryslers except Jeep ( I love Jeep), Ford Mustang. Oh my lord there are so many aspirational shitty cars it is unbelievable.

The Smart does not aspire to be anything!

p.s. forgive this rant but until you have owned one......

And what is the Jaguar X-type doing there? Yes it was not big, but it was not meant to be! If you wanted a bigger Jag there was the S-type. Being based on the European Mondeo was great as the Mondeo is one of the best driving small family saloons.

Sshhhhheeeeesh!!!!!!!
