He makes a headphones amp that I like to try someday.

It reminds me of the Floating City from the old Flash Gordon series.......and similarly antique.

I think in the end the product should be judged on its performance. And the Torii certainly performs.

Jeff...first of all, good meeting you at the Cape last weekend. In any case, I was curious what speakers you drove with the Zen Torii? Also, how would you compare the sound to tube amps you have recently used: ARC, C-J, Octave, McIntosh, etc...). I know this is a low powered amp and most of the amps I am asking you to compare to were generally higher-powered tube amps but to the extent you can make high-level comparisons to the house sound of some of these other amps that would be helpful. I would assume, you would need at least 90dB speakers with nominal impedance of 6ohms and up and no dips below 4ohms to match with the Zen Torii but your answer above to what speakers you used with them will be instructive in how well it mated with your various speakers

Hi Cyril, same here! Well, you'll have to wait for the review for all that! But suffice to say, it's had no problem driving the GamuT S9's (89db, 4ohms), the B&W 802 Diamonds (90db, 8 ohms) and the new Penaudios I have in for review. I just bought a pair of Verity Audio Rienze's that will be here next week, so I'll be curious to see how it does with those at 87db.
It's a very intriguing amplifier. Think of it as a very high performance 400cc sportbike as opposed to a 1000cc bike. No match for the big bike on the straights, but through the twisties, you might just be surprised. I ended up buying the Torii, as I'd like to keep it in our permanent stable of reference amplifiers. |

You got it! I'm really taken with this amp as you can probably tell. And I haven't even started tube rolling in earnest either. Have a few different rectifiers and VR tubes on the way as well as a set of the Shuguang EL-34's (which are excellent).
Because the Torii is super easy on tubes, I'm even considering buying a couple of sets of vintage NOS EL-34's for this one. Crazy. |
