no standby switch on Accuphase .. what do you do?
So it occurred to me, that unlike with my McIntosh and dCS gear, my Accuphase DP-560 doesn't provide for a stand by switch... so one has two options.
a) Leave it an all the time and it's warm and ready to play - minimum stress on the components from thermal cycling b) Turn it off when not in use, which could mean turning it on and off more than once a day, but it stays off the majority of the time, vs in option a) being on all the time. It's also room temperature when you turn it on, so needs 1 hour or so for the circuits to warm up. What do you chose to do, and why? And I wonder what Accuphase's position on this is? |

In my opinion the answer is "A". My entire system is on 24/7, except during storms or gone on vacation. Avoid thermal cycling.

There was a huge study done by the aerospace industry (many others I’m sure)
on dormancy as well as on/off cycling effects on electronics. Your answer is on page 165... https://apps.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/768619.pdf I’ll save you the trouble of looking for it. Electronics do not enjoy frequent on/off cycling for many reasons. I turn my system on in the morning and put it into standby mode or OFF when standby not available on gear when I’m done for the day. Obviously tube gear gets turned on, warmed up, enjoyed and goes off to save tubes. |

Topic reminded me of the “centennial” light. There is a light bulb that has been on since 1901 and is still going strong. Secret? It’s never been turned off....

Well, just the very fact that they don't even offer a standby switch implies that want it left on.. That said, apart from my tube stuff, I generally either leave it on, or put in standby when that option is available.

The same power on/off issue is present on all Esoteric gear. I have more than one system that I use a power sequencer to power the gear up in the proper sequence, as well as powering down in the proper sequence.
When employing a power sequencer, your gears power switch is left in the powered on mode. Best of all, you can configure the sequencer to initiate with a key switch for an extra level of “hands off” protection. My other Accuphase/Esoteric systems are left on all the time when I am home.

the consensus so far is keeping the power on.. I assume the laser on the disc is also off while it's not playing?

Power is switched on once a day when in use. (It is neither on normally, nor only when in use, so none of the poll options apply.)
Leaving power always on would consume too much energy (2x Accuphase A-250 plus all additional system components = close to 1000W !) Martin |

I turned my DP900,DC901 off when not in use.
I think that thermal issue will not take effect within normal use and normal life cycle of product, Let’s say it will not Break down within ten years. In the mean time, the PS520 Has been ON for two years already, I really want to replace it with PS530 due to much lower no load power consumption, but the expense to do so outweighs electricity saving. Here in Europe, the power switches off automatically after 2 hours!
These are European regulations. However, it is possible to turn off the power switch off... to keep the machines running. |
