Wadia + DACMagic = new Ipod!
OK, so I got my daughter the Wadia 170i dock at AKfest, but didn't have a DAC for it yet. I put it away and more or less forgot about it until she asked me what happened to that idea I had for her Ipod. Today I picked up the DAC Magic to pass it through. I get it all hooked up and I'm waiting breathlessly to hear how much better this is going to sound over a direct feed into her McIntosh C-504. (She has the Mac slimline 500 series, 502, 504, 500, and a 7000 Mac CD player) She places the Ipod into the Wadia and I'm waiting, make it play I say to her. She tells me the screen says " OK to disconnect". I mess with it for a few minutes. I think maybe the Wadia isn't getting any power, since the display on the Ipod shows it's charging and it does have a display I figure that can't be it. What to do, what to do! I call the guy at Wadia (he's in Michigan) I tell him what it's doing. He asks which Ipod this is, I tell him It's a 40 GB he asks how old it is and I figure it's got to be 3-4 years old. He asks if my daughter has ever downloaded firmware from the itunes sight. I ask her about it and she says she has as it does it automatically every time she goes there. We tell him all of this. Well he says it's a problem of the Ipod being too old (wrong generation LIKE ME) and it can't talk to the Wadia so it won't work. I said a few things to the Wadia and it didn't want to talk to me either! He says maybe it will work with the remote that came with the Wadia, but no dice. So now we need to get the Ipod classic with 120 GB of space and daughter Sam needs to re-load this new one. Why can't these toys ever be easy ? No one ever asked when I got the Wadia what generation Ipod I was going to use, but now they are a wealth of information. Oh well live and learn. I guess later this week we go Ipod shopping again . I guess thank God this isn't a McIntosh priced item cause the cost would put a stop to this! $250.00 for a new Ipod I can live with . Cheers, Frank
