Sounds luscious. I love steel frames. I diverted for a few years to carbon fiber and am oh so glad I returned. Plus, I broke a carbon fiber fork (about 1.5 years old, just riding along on flat pavement), but wasn't hurt. Could have easily broken my neck, so I'm back on a full steel rig and loving it. Of course, just like audio, YMMV.

I have to add though that I'm no hammer head and don't watch the grams very closely on my bikes - if I did, I'd likely be back on some carbon fiber frame.

Still love my Cannondale CAAD9, I am 2mtr's tall, so the Bike shop advised me to buy a stiff aluminium frame (63cm), the carbon frames get more "flimsy" at that size.

For me the aluminium frame is comfortable enough.

I'm going to have to look into aluminum for a more serious bike for our beach place. I suspect a nice steel frame wouldn't do very well for very long in the salt.

I think a frame saver treatment and frequent rinses and you'd be just fine with a steel bike.
I don't like aluminum frames - to me they are more harsh and buzzy than even carbon fiber.
Have you considered a bamboo frame? Boo Bicycles out of Ft. Collins has some nice frames. I rode a demo Aluminum/Bamboo bike for about 60 miles on this last Colorado tour and liked it a lot. Very smooth ride. Smoother than steel and just as stiff.

After all of my stereo purchases, I think my wife would make me sleep out of doors if I bought a bamboo frame (which sounds quite interesting though)
