Marion Brown's Georgia Trilogy + 1:
Afternoon of a Georgia Faun, a 1970 ECM German pressing with Anthony Braxton, Bennie Maupin, Chick Corea, Andrew Cyrille and Jeanne Lee - lots of "little" percussion. Geechee Recollections, a 1973 quadrophonic LP on Impulse with Marion joined by Leo Smith, James Jefferson, Steve McCall and Kohena Adzenyah, William Malone and Jumma Santos on percussion. Bill Hasson recites a Jean Toomer poem. Sweet Earth Flying, the 1974 pinnacle of the trilogy with Muhal Richard Abrams and Paul Bley exploring piano, ring modulated Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes electric piano with freedom and curiosity that does not consign the music to the early-1970s. James Jefferson, Steve McCall and Bill Hasson return. The incorporation of the poetry does place the recording in a particular period of time, but don't let that scare you away - Sweet Earth Flying is an under appreciated masterpiece. November Cotton Flower, the final part of the Georgia trilogy, a 1979 Japanese Baystate LP with Hilton Ruiz (listed as Hilton 'Luiz'), Earl May, Warren Smith - Karl Raush play guitar on two cuts, including the gorgeous title cut.

A famous jazz journalist here called this the Goldberg Variations of Jazz. Indispensable album for Monk (and jazz in general) lovers.
