One that sticks in my mind was from 1964, Terry by Twinkle. Got banned by the BBC and ITV for suicide references.
That made it even more popular. Unfortunately and sadly Twinkle didn't twinkle much on stage either.

The 1963 hit "Hello Stranger" by Barbara Lewis. Yvonne Elliman did a marvelous cover of it in the 70's, which had better fidelity, but I still remember the 1963 original, with great fondness:
