SAM99 Mac is never truly out of gear. If the 462 is a month old I would have it replaced. It could be a lemon. Give Mac a call and have your serial number ready. They should overnight a 462 to your house and your dealer should have it installed the next day. I would not accept this unit under any circumstance. You need to speak to Chuck Hinton or Ron Cornelius. Also, because a piece is back ordered is zero excuse for using non standard sub quality parts. The Mac your are describing is not the Mac I have dealt with for many years. Every effort should be made by Mac to get you a new unit that is perfect with standard parts, period. It took me months to get my MR87 tuner because it was back ordered and a limited production product. No Mac purchaser deserves anything less than a perfect unit.

Best

Agree with this - transport is more risky than replacing. It is an easy repair, and likely invisible once done.

Default IEC input on my Mc462 just failed 😞

K6UA de W9TR

I agree with your approach - nonsense to send it back to the mothership when you can fix it yourself in 10 minutes.

See if a Furutech IEC socket will fit in the chassis and if so buy one and you’ll be set for the life of the amp.

No offense at all, but let’s not de-rail the OP’s thread.

McIntosh will not overnight anything, especially not that 115 monster. I went thru this already when the first amp I ordered came to my dealer damaged and I had to wait over a month for a new one to be made and another week for shipping from NY.. The dealer wants me to carry it down to them, they will order the part ad replace it... there is NO CHANCE of a replacement unit for this failure.

Yep... so basic and yet my dealer is insisting I bring it to them for repair rather than do it myself... pulling the "liability" card ... and I don't want any issues with the remainder of the warranty so I am likely going to oblige ... BUT, I will try to get them to install a higher quality (Furtech or some other brand) IEC... this one is utter crap.

Some are a lot more hard core than others... I am not a working EE, and don't build my own radios from scratch like my late uncle-in-law (the original K6UA did)... I did however operate a pretty cool DX station for about 8 years before divorce caused me to selll it all and now I am lucky to get on 2 meter band once in a while. I was even working as a OOC (amateur observer, policing the airwaves on behalf of the AARL for the FCC).

It's the only reason I have been able to retain any kind of basic electrical knowledge after 30 years graduation with an EE degree.

on a separate note. / question to those who might be more in the know...

Can you think of why the 3rd (ground) pin in the IEC wasn't connected to anything when I opened up the amp? (see pictures in post #3 above to see what I am talking about) .. There wasn't even a loose connector to be found.. it's as if they're just using the chassis as ground maybe?

Why is there no chance for a replacement unit? You don't know what else might be wrong. You are going to be keeping the unit for a long time. The dealer should pick it up immediately and you should get a new unit asap. It shouldn't take long. Now of course you will do what you think is best for you, but as for me I would want a new one. I am so sorry this has happened to you. I can't go into specifics but I believe when Mac finds out about this they will take care of you very quickly. It's in their best interest to do so. It's a tradition with Mac. Give them the opportunity to make it right.

Best

not based on this single failure Charles... If the failure were a multiple occurrence maybe, but it's the first problem, and thus why they have a warranty.. it's really a non-issue as its purely a mechanical failure and not an electrical one.
