Nicolai Myaskovsky's 27th (and last) symphony dates from 1949. He, too, was a target of the Zhdanov decrees, if a lesser one.

Excellent performances by the Vasily Petrenko-conducted Oslo Phiharmonic.

This would be fantastic in multichannel indeed.
But it is still great in stereo too.

Beethoven - Sonata in G major, Op. 96 for Piano and Violin
Enescu - Sonata No. 3 Op. 25 in Rumanian Folkstyle
David Abel, violin
Julie Steinberg, piano
Qobuz 24/176.4

The Enescu Sonata is a very moving piece!

I tried to find more details about this fantastic album, only available via download.
It must consist of recordings brought out earlier on different LPs.
Sound and performance are top notch!

It seems to be a re-release of an album recorded in 1978-80. But did the original sound that good or is this a remaster?

On that original recording, an LP, not all three works fitted.
It is the same picture though.

Comparing the Wilson recording with this 30s version of the Enescu Sonata.
Sound: Wilson wins.
Performance: Menuhin, a landslide victory.

Just like last time, playing one version of the Enescu Sonata after the other.
Sound is important for us audiophiles, but the music comes first.
And that's why Menuhin wins this little comparison. Again.

Noted thanks!

Is it a remaster though? Wondering if DG are embarking a revamping of their catalog?
