TAS - TT setup

Did anyone read the lastest The Absolute Sound? The article on the steps for turntable setup - I found one very important step missing; anyone else? I reread the article 3 times to be sure I was not overlooking this crucial step.

I suppose what I thought was the missing step could be covered in the VTF setting.

You know - I set up my LP-S with a USB microscrope for "perfect" SRA, and it sounded awful, nowhere near parallel, given 1o = @6mm VTA, I don't think it's of any great moment. But I do applaud that we have something else to obsess over..

I just get Mike Fremer to drive down from Jersey to set up my cart every time I change it. (Or the turntable itself, come to think of it.)

He uses the USB microscope, so who am I to complain?

There is an interesting new article on The Audio Beat entitled Analog 101. It is done in conjunction with VPI and covers turntable setup and more. Although not as much of a detailed 'how to', it struck me as reasonably modern and comprehensive. Several of the sections drill down further into details.

I found it unusual they did not cover tonearm balancing....and as I said, I guess that could be considered part of setting VTF.

The one thing I see missing is any discussion of what alignment geometry to use, i.e. Baerwald, Loefgren, Stevenson, etc. While the most basic paper protractors don't provide choices, the universal Feickert tool referenced in the article does.
