Just got a call from Otis (FTW Audio) regarding the power supply I sent down for refirb. He found a leaking cap so I was lucky to pull my (working) MS300-750 when I did before serious damage happens. Maybe this is why I have seen some occasional start failures in the last 3 weeks....or not. Time will tell. I think the advice of others to have one's power supply overhauled by them is spot on and if you do not do so,you essentially have a "ticking bomb" (figuratively, of course) on your hands.

That was a good catch Steve! It's nice when you can plan for downtime knowing that it will be up and running again soon.

Dan deserves a good deal of credit for pointing out in mid-December that my failure to start issues could signal a power drive issue and that not dealing with that promptly could bring nasty consequences. The day after Christmas (no need for the Christmas carols music files at that point), I pulled the plug on it. For I-Radio I now use the browser in my new Sony 4K TV to tune in my favorite jazz station in CH and got the machine in to my tech who pulled the PS for its trip to FT Worth.

I am not trying to beat a dead horse but, does the fan come on any time the 300 is plugged in and then stay on or does it go on only when the unit heats up. The reason I ask is the fan does not ever come on even though the HD is on and running. Maybe my PS still has a problem???

I have the quiet fans installed in mine; they run most of the time.

Here is an AVS thread regarding the dreaded red flashing light subject on the Escient sister product, Fireball. May not fit Ed's case, but worth checking out for some of you having issues. OP Stefuel seems to know a lot about these beasts and since 2002 has 5000 posts on the AVS forum (!!!!).. I PM'ed him a month ago, but he never responded and he has not posted for 6 weeks, so I wonder if something happened to him.

Our forum rules don't permit links to other forums; however understanding how frustrating these troubles can be on the MSxxx I will permit it; just this one time.

Since I haven't read any of the content; proceed with caution, at your own expense.

Apologies, Ivan. Was not aware of that rule. Your permitting this one time under these circumstances is kind and appropriate. I doubt there is a single unit/ series in Mc-land that is causing this much agony.

what I don't understand in all of this is why the main PCB and power supply are so picky and fragile? I have been travel all over the world with my Macbook and stock charger from Apple and plug it in just about anywhere from China to South America and it works - in this day and age (meaning 21st century) why is coming up with a stable power supply for something like this so difficult? Why can't someone come up with a stable replacement that we can us instead if this has been identified as a common problem? I am not trying to pick on the design (as I know very little about the engineering of such things), but just trying to understand and prevent a big investment in time/music/money from becoming a brick?
