Agreed Dan, I don't believe the MC501's are bad amps at all.

When I demo'ed the MC1.2Kw's I thought they were slightly better then the MC501's but not for $22k.

Dan,
you know that I did not mean that .
Your system is perfectly set up with the JL sub. Not many of us here can achieve these results with the same gear. ( Pyro, I don't presume that you're not an expert also...) You're extremely patient and an expert for fine tuning. Moreover you already have an impressive tube system in the studio. That is why I told you, and I maintain, that if I were in your shoes, I would not buy the 2301's.
In your main system, the 2301's would bring an increase in overall performance but I' m not sure if you would appreciate a sound that would be a bit colder than the 501's, which are a bit warmer IMO, and you would loose in terms of convenience, ezpecially if you leave the system on all day long.
But for someone thinking about upgrading the EB1i, I strongly suggest to go for them or the 1.2kWs. Both have a larger bandwidth in my opinion, and a higher insight into music.

Rob
Rob,

I would agree here. I think that the differences are rather subtile ( because they both have the same sonic signature : they are on the warm side) between the 501's and the 1.2 kWs, except for power and probably low bass drive and control. But if you' re using a sub, that is not a concern.
But the 2301's sound is much more different than the 501's. You hear a large difference from the beginning.
And IMO, the increase in price with the 501's is fully justified.
With the EB1i, they are by far my best investment. I don' t regret a single dollar I spent for them, and now that I know them as I do, I would pay up to 30 k for them !

Hi Rob,

Have you had the chance to have a listen to a pair of 7B's or a pair of 28B's? If you have the chance to, check them out.. If you were to go higher in the PMC line IB, MB, BB, the difference would be immediately apparent in the midrange and overall power handling. Dispersion, accuracy, and imaging are taken to a new level... A more powerful amp may be just the ticket at a good bit less than $20k... With EB through up the BB you'll want to be running with an amp that can really let loose at all impedances. Whether you're looking at Mc, Bryston or what have you, make sure it can deliver the current.

(MF TITAN anyone?)

Ian,

I have not had the chance to listen to any of the Bryston Amps.

Right now if I did an upgrade to my amps it would be a pair of MC1.2Kw's to go along with the rest of Mcintosh equipment.

Thanks,
Rob

Thanks Jerome your explanation has helped me to decide what I will be doing.

Jérôme.......I am only joking. I was very impressed with the MC2301's in Ivan's two channel system at the Cape. Excellent presentation, almost holographic.

It seems like the logical thing to do; once you own the MC1.2K's the rest are just imposters.
