Mike.......My reaction to the article is not positive, not because the premise of the article has no merit, but because this type of writing does nothing to promote the audio industry in a good light. In fact it does just the opposite in my opinion. I'm sure Allen Farmelo believes he is a hip creative wizard for having thought up his foul slogan but in my mind it represents poor judgement, limited imagination, and a certain level of contemptuous disrespect for the reader. Unfortunately, his profane descriptor demonstrates the degree to which some writers will stoop to leave an impression, even if it stinks. The same can be said of Audiophile Review's editor for approving and allowing such low class dribble to be published on their website.

Dan,
I would agree with you whole heartedly if this were an article written in a non-industry publication like The Wall Street Journal or Time Magazine where the reader wouldn't have a grasp of alternatives. But this was in an audio only blog where readers do have an understanding of the better alternatives. |

Mike.......I understand the point you are making but none the less once published no one has control over who will read it. My opinion is just one reader expressing a reaction. There is no need or purpose for such a descriptor. No-fi, low-fi, mid-fi, hi-fi, high-end, and ultra hi-end pretty much covers the bases. From my point of view the author took his creative license, what little he seems own, one step too far. Other opinions may vary.

I agree, it's best to call it no fi. 128 kbps on a genuine dap is Low-fi, 320 kbps on even more genuine daps +dac/amps and h/phones is the start of mid. The start mind, not the middle or end.

Hmm, I read the article and agreed. Sadly, our culture has become so coarse that the use of his one main descriptor doesn't seem too offensive.
Also, I've always disliked the intended lo-fi sound! I have an LP that has intentional bad LP noise and for me, it ruins the record. |
