Well recorded, well played album with 2 fantastic guitarists.
Bassist and drummer are on the same (high) level.

Listening again to this really great album.

More new jazz, from a Presto recommendation. Very nice lyrical improvisations on traditional spirituals, well recorded.

Enjoying this again!

The Oscar Peterson Trio - Night Train
Qobuz 24/96

Not the best sounding (neither does my CD) album, but a very relaxing one.
And that's what we want today!

Ahmad Jamal - Chamber Music Of The New Jazz
via Qobuz

This man is still active at 90 years old!
But this was recorded in '55. (May 23).

This album is unusual in two ways. Because pianist Ahmad Jamal would soon become famous for his piano/bass/drums trios, it is often forgotten that, up until 1956, his group consisted of bassist Israel Crosby and guitarist Ray Crawford. Crawford's percussive hitting of his guitar would soon be utilized by Herb Ellis in Oscar Peterson's Trio. And, although it is know that Miles Davis listened closely to Jamal and often "borrowed" his repertoire, few probably realize that Gil Evans based some of his famous arrangements on Jamal's interpretations. A comparison of "New Rumba" and "Medley" (which is really "I Don't Want To Be Kissed") on this album with Evans' version for Miles Ahead in 1957 sounds nearly identical despite the very different personnel. It is a pity that Jamal would soon change his group's instrumentation since his communication with Crawford and Crosby (heard here on such tunes as "A Foggy Day," "All of You," "I Get a Kick out of You" and "Spring Is Here") was often magical, but he would soon gain great popularity with the upcoming guitarless trio (which was just as telepathic).

Ahmad Jamal - Jamal at The Pershing Volume Two
via Qobuz

Recorded January 17, 1958.

Ahmad Jamal – piano
Israel Crosby - double bass
Vernel Fournier - drums

Recorded at the same engagement as his best-selling But Not for Me, this outing by pianist Ahmad Jamal (with bassist Israel Crosby and drummer Vernell Fournier) is just as successful musically, even if its sales figures were not on the same level. Jamal and his sidemen had a magical chemistry during this era, and the pianist's close attention to dynamics gave the group its own sound. Among the highlights of the 11 standards are "Too Late Now," "Cherokee," "Gone with the Wind" and a remake of "Billy Boy."

Ahmad Jamal Trio - At The Pershing / But Not For Me
via Qobuz

Recorded Jan 16, '58.

Seemed appropriate to stream the first album as well.

The first album by the trio of pianist Ahmad Jamal, bassist Israel Crosby, and drummer Vernell Fournier was a big seller partly due to the classic rendition of "Poinciana." The live LP (which unfortunately has only 29 minutes of music) features very tight interplay among the musicians and light but passionate versions of such other songs as "But Not for Me," "Surrey With the Fringe on Top," and "Woody 'n You." A classic that really defined Ahmad Jamal's distinctive sound in many people's minds.

New release by Little North.

Musically satisfying although it would have been better to my ears if the recording did not put so much emphasis into the piano as it overpowers and dominates while sounding a bit sterile. The drum work is really good though.
