I have 9 gb ram. I have not had any horse power issues. The noise from the mini was annoying and it did run hot.

I only have 8GB on some of the older units but running Mountain Lion causes more spinning rainbows than if I were on Snow Leopard.

One thing I tried tonight was to plug the Mac Mini into a different outlet than the amp and pre-amp. I think it might be worth trying if you have a separate outlet / circuit near to your D100.

Typo, I meant 8 gb ram. I get the rainbow wheel more w Mountain Lion too. Doesn't A+ sound better in Mountain Lion?

Yes. Can you not easily swap the HD in your existing mini for a faster (7200 rpm) or SSD? I still like the NAS idea. It solves two problems (one now and one possible future problem - storage space!)

Glad you're happy with the SSD. It made a difference (mainly speed) for me as well.
