A friend has the 802D's, we have tried many different positions and toe-in, best result we got is crossing just in front of the listening position

... so that would mean a rather strong "toe-in". As I have tried toeing them in until crossing slight behind listening position and found no improvement to an almost open (minimal toe-in) setup (the bass got a little thinner when toeing in, the center was more defined but the width of the stage got lost). Ended up opening them up again - but I have never toed them in to cross before listening position.

I have the 803 diamonds. They are toed slightly but most definitely not crossed in front of the center listening position. They cross behind the center listening position.
In this setup I attained a pseudo 3D sound.
Sitting dead center the vocals as well as certain music pieces appear to be coming from center stage. In reality it is not and I am surrounded in music.
Takes time and patience for speaker placement is imperative.
I started by using the Trianglization method. Distance between speakers + distance from speakers to listening position. (sweet spot)
It does not have to be exact to work...you can cheat a little on the measurements
My 803's are 3.5' from back wall and because of room restraints inches from side walls. My walls front and back are ascouticly treated.

I have also experimented lots with the 802 Diamonds - but never tried toeing them in so far, that they actually cross "before" the listening position.

Would love to hear if it`s worth the hassle of moving the 70Kilos to such an extreme "toe-in" or if they work best when only toed in slightly (as stated by B&W Europe and most reviewers such as Stereo etc.).

... okay - tried it with 802 Diamonds. Brings the music into the room and makes up for a nice sweetspot. Kinda looses the width or stage though - any thoughts ? For now I went back to a more open/wide setup...

So just like almost every other dome-tweeter loudspeaker then. Toe in for more soundstage detail, center fill, and increased treble. Toe out for wider stage, more ambiance, and a more laid back treble. Personal preference here, not a right or wrong scenario.

The placement of speakers is imperative. While some people may not classified speaker placement as a right way or wrong way there is a formula that will make your system perform to its full potential and than some.
I believe the video below is a good measurement of what can be done.
It can also be fun and in the end that's what this hobby is about...fun.

Depends on what you mean by really strong "toe-in." Toe-in and distance apart are interrelated. The further apart the 802 Diamonds are from one another, the more toe in you'll need up to a point. Place them too far from each other, and no amount of toe-in will result in a proper stereo image. If you want to play with toe-in, my advice is to spike your speakers and then toe in and out off of one spike consistently. In other words, always use the outside rear spike as the pivot point on each speaker.

Hi Patrick,
that`s the way I always do it. I "mark" the spikes (or their plates) with a pencil and then use the inner mark as a "fix point" when I toe in the speakers equally by pushing the rear toward the outside.

I have just never toed them in to cross before my listening position.

I found toeing them in further than minimal (about 3 cm depth from outer to inner spike) to bring no significant advantage in imaging ( they produce an amazing center stage even with a very open setup) but you get a loss in stage/width.

So I went back to an open setup.

What`s the official advice for setup by B&W in America (just out of curiosity) ?
