The desktop doesn’t have an ssd boot drive but that’s something I’ve needed to do anyway. Hope I can figure it out without a rip and re-pave.

All my music is on the NAS in folders organized by artist name.

The Surface Pro’s don’t have wired Ethernet without an adapter so it looks like the best bet for now is to load core on the desktop. I just looked and it’s a 3.3GHz i5.

Thanks!

I’m still running my core on my desktop. Has not been an issue so far and it’s an 8 year old Alienware rig with good specs but nothing like today’s rigs.

Dedicated Roon core to follow but no hurry on my end.

You’re on the right track. The desktop with SSD is the way to go, and leave the music on the Synology. When you get there, holler if you need help configuring Roon to find your NAS.

Tomorrow AM the new ssd goes in and if all is well Roon core. Tony - I’ll definitely take advantage of your kind offer if needed.

Remeber, you dont need all these elaborate setups either. You can run the roon core/server and the Roon endpoint application on the same machine even. Then just point your Roon application at your NAS and put the credentials for whatever online music services you have.

But I can offer yet another alternative, and take this scenario a step further.. For example, I run my Roon server inside a virtual machine so its not even on a "real" computer at all.. And my music is stored on guess what? Another virtual machine.. The bottom line is you will very quickly come to what works best for you. Roon is not a demanding nor difficult application to run on any modern hardware.

Thanks! Nice to know I can run Roon in a VM. I need to update my desktop with an ssd anyway so that’s the first order of business.

Default Hey Roonies!

Replaced boot HDD with SSD. Super easy to do. Didn’t even have to mess with the bios. Made the machine a lot more snappy.

Loaded Roon Core on desktop machine.

Hardest part was remembering the NAS path.

Roon is indexing the library now.

Setup Surface Pro 3 with RoonBridge as endpoint driving my Yggdrasil.

Roon discovered all my Sonos devices.

Started a Qobuz trial.

Worked through some initial stability issues with core but I think I have those resolved.

So far so good.

Next up is to setup SurfacePro 7 as a remote.

That should do it.

Hey Tom - Sounds like you are up and running -

I moved the Roon core to the NAS (in this case a Synology DS720+ *) - As Tony (Antonmb) recommended , the Roon server and database are on a small portable SSD attached via USB C to the NAS. This works very well, and runs multiple zones simultaneously. I do not use any digital processing (DSP) however beyond downsampling as needed to the Sonos endpoints.

You can quickly restore from the Roon back-up if you choose to move the Roon Core around (i.e you won't need to repeat the initial indexing).

Beyond all the geeky stuff, Roon is fantastic.

Regarding library folders, our structure is set-up on the NAS as: volume1/Music/Library_Music/Genre/Artist/Album/files. No issues.

*Intel Celeron J4125 4-core 2.0 GHz
