Pick a Pärt
Bart - if you were to recommend a single Arvo Pärt disc for the uninitiated, which would you choose?

I own some of Feinberg's compositions, but this is my first disc by him as a performer--wow! He plays with such beauty and soul. The sound is 1959 mono, but it is perfectly listenable.

So true! Excellent recommendation, bart!

Schnittke's 3rd Symphony is a bewildering away of "quasi quotes," as he calls them, blended into a sometimes chaotic haze of sound. I think I like it...Anyway, there's no question about the demonstration-quality sound, though--wow!

Mahler: Symphony No. 3
I'm expanding my Mahler horizons...
Mahler: Symphony No. 3 Michelle DeYoung (mezzo soprano), Peter Sullivan (solo trombone) & George Vosburgh (post horn) Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh & Children’s Festival Chorus of Pittsburgh, Manfred Honeck This set combines wonderful SACD sound from the Japanese Exton label with a superb performance by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra directed by the VPO alumnus and native Austrian Manfred Honeck. Good stuff. The SACD layer is in Stereo only. |

I know there are newer interpretations and perhaps better recordings, but I seem to gravitate back to these earlier recordings done in 1975-79 by the BSO and Sir Colin Davis.
Typical excellent sonics from Phillips. The understandable performance of the 6th has not been bettered, imo |
