The Bass Viol (viola de gamba) is a wonderful instrument. Marin Marais composed some interesting music in his time. Well, I guess he had to be great composer and a Bass Viol player since he was the regular violist for the King! Great find Bart.

PHC1 recommended listen.
I had a lot of fun with this album and immersing myself into Marin Marais for the evening. 3+ hours listening marathon, non-stop and with total pleasure. I find Marin Marais compositions easy on the ear and not stirring too much drama in the soul. Classical music has that tendency of evoking powerful emotions and thoughts and it is not always agreeable or of the right emotions at the right time... Not with this album. It just flows smoothly, engages and stirs up only positive emotions and evokes positive thoughts while triggering happy memories. Bass Viol is a powerful instrument and an impactful messenger of the music created by a composer but seems to agree with my ears at all times of the day or evening and never stirs me the wrong way. What emotions and thoughts were going through Marin Marais, in his head, in his heart, in his soul, what stirred them, he laid it out and forever encoded it into music, for all of us to enjoy some 300 years later and perhaps until the end of time... That is the beauty of classical music. The music is the bridge, at least for the duration of the album, the musical bridge connects the composer and listener so the two become one, to glimpse into that distant past and experience the sound that stirred the soul of a man that expressed his emotions though sound. François Joubert-Caillet is today a key musician of the baroque scene, applauded for his « sovereign virtuosity », the « finesse of his playing ». He certainly left an impression on me. Serge, he's indeed very good. I recently posted an album of his in this thread. Viola da gamba... I need a dose almost every week. Sainte-Colombe, Marais, Abel, Couperin, Telemann, and some others all wrote music that is very healing.
