I would say the performance is very comparable to both (a fully run-in Bifrost was very comparable to the Wadia before the new Schiit analog and USB upgrade; the Bifrost could well be better after...). The DSD files, however, have a depth, spaciousness, sense of ambience and micro-details that the analogous PCM files lack.

I think I am going crazy, but I am getting the same thing with DSD files..

No, you're not going crazy, Bill. I'm coming to the same conclusion...I only have a limited data set yet, so I can't extrapolate from a "statistical model" with too few degrees of freedom, but I'm coming to the conclusion that DSD is the best digital-sounding audio file format I've yet heard. By that I mean the closest-sounding to analogue, and being the die-hard LP-loving guy that I am (with three turntables), that's saying something.

No, Audirvana can convert DSD to PCM on the fly and it does an excellent job of that, but it still doesn't sound as good as streaming native DSD to a DSD-capable DAC. I've done the comparison....

Jeff Dorgay, of Tone Audio, mentions in his review of the dCS "Stack" that when upsampled to DSD, ~"Even 128Kbps Rhapsody files sounded good, and it should" for what you pay..

Playback Designs and EMM Labs also use DSD DACs. If you feed it PCM, it will convert it on the fly to DSD2x before sending it to the DAC.

dCS DACs can be switched between DSD and PCM modes.
