Unless I'm missing the author's point, he seems to be differentiating between a recording technique with the specific intent of producing a less-than-ideal sound, and technology (ear buds, gas station audio) that, regardless of quality of source, produce repulsive sonics. I agree with the thesis. The rest is, quite literally, just semantics, for which individual taste and opinion will differ.
