Lastly, the R-1s are so large, that they could be more challenging with respect to optimal setup; they could easily over-power and over-pressurize some rooms that are not large enough.
I beg to differ, R1 is very forgiving as far as setup as well as being close to walls they are as forgiving as my old Tannoy Canterburry SE. But I do agree there a TAD heavy but these Herbie sliders make that a moot point on hardwood floors.

The R1's would of course be larger, and to my ears the clear winner on SQ. Maybe I should just stick with my original decision, but those darn R1's look and sound so amazing. O.o

Hi Masterlu!

I think this picture is mk1.

The bas membrane in mk2 looks like this.

The only difference should be the surface. The carbon is more rough in MK2. Nothing else is different due to my knowledge.

The sound is still the same. I recently listened for 5h to this system.
It's truly a great reference system. One of may favorites.
This room does need some acoustic treatment though, but it sounded great without too. The total lack of distortion, extremely good micro and macro dynamics and the true presentation of any instrument and voices makes this a killer.
I must say that the price is low compared to how it perform.

I had both the cr1 and the r1 as speakers. As good as cr1 are, and they are incredible, the R1 is clearly superior. There is a scale and mejesty in the r1 sound that cr1 can reach. And it makes a diference. Having the cr1 a huge sound for the size which is not small at all, but still amonitor, the r1 is something else. When compared directly is when you can hear the difference. You do not need that big of a room at all to make them sound great.

Dear eelii08,

I'm not surprised by your feedback. The original Ref One is a real beast, a kind of "UFO" in the hifi landscape. I love it very very much.

Which other speaker do you own now after the these TAD Ref Series? Quite curious to understand what kind of speakers could please your ears after being used to a so high quality?
