Anybody remember when Al Bundy & friends (Married with Children) put a satellite dish on the roof. How many times did Al & Jefferson fall off the roof.

I paid an antenna installer to put a Winegard yagi and rotor on my pitched roof when I got my MR77 a few weeks ago. Having been up there and done that more than once myself, at 71 I consider the cost this time around well worth it.
I've read varying opinions on the ST2. Some love it, some hate it (the latter, perhaps, because their location is less than ideal?). Since I've just acquired an MR74 for a bedroom system (needs new glass, so I'm about to order that) and would prefer not to deal with splitter loss, I'm considering installing a second antenna well away from the Winegard. The ST2 looks like a convenient solution and one I can put up myself without much hassle, but one stereo station I listen to is 70 air miles away and line-of-sight is partially blocked by a hill a few hundred feet higher than my location. So, opinions, please: Is an omnidirectional whip like the ST2 likely to do the trick in that circumstance? Or should I just resign myself to eating the splitter loss? Thanks for whatever wisdom you care to impart.

I live in a mountainous valley with terrible reception issues.
I installed one of these in my house, next to my home theater system. Picked up the one station I wanted, that being the Laramie NPR station. Great product. GG

I live in the hills and have an ST-2 and a Wineyard Yagi (for different systems). My house is at the base of a mountain which partially blocks most signals, but the ST-2 picks them up well (although the Yagi is better). I'd try the ST-2, which is only around $100, and if it doesn't work, sell it. I bet you'll be fine though.

Thanks for the feedback, especially since I still haven't gotten around to doing anything about "outdooring" either the bedroom tuner (now an MR-77) or the MR-74, which I've decided to park in my home office. I'll give the ST2 a try.

The ST-2 when vertical is omnidirection. In an urban setting this may result in too much multipath distortion. It can be converted to a "directional" antenna by using it in a horizontal orientation with the axis of the whip perpendicular to the direction of the station you are trying to pick up. Varying degrees of oblique orientations wll be "semi-directonal" I believe. In my location, near downtown Vancouver, BC neither a 4 element Yagi nor an 9 element Yagi improved reception of the two stations I listen to. Thankfully, both are broadcast off the same tower on a local mountain so using the ST-2 in "directional" mode works well.

Also a big fan of the st2. Previously i had it on the roof and it was insane wobbly going up on the ladder to remove it when we moved. At our current place, i've routed it to the attic and will wait till we get our roof redone later this year and have them mount it properly. Great antenna. Well worth the cost.

Have an ST2 on my roof - 3 story Victorian. Can receive the PBS FM station in stereo - 9/10 signal from 50 miles away with my Magnum Dynalab tuner. The antenna installer installed the antenna with a 15 degree list on a 5' pole above my roofline so it's about 40' above ground.
The ST2 brings in over 30 stations in stereo. It's not as sensitive at the extreme ends of the dial. |
