Is Venom v14 PC digital really best for turntables?
Read a few posts about the designer of the Venom V14 digital cable recommending it for the turntable power supply, regardless of price of turntable. That seems like a pretty emphatic statement by the designer of Shunyata cables. I am glad to hear that type of openness and honesty by the designer. I would like to know if anyone has any real world experience with using that type of power cable with their turntable and what results were discovered. I have a Transrotor Apollon TMD turntable completely maxed out with three motors, PS Audio P12 and Aesthetix IoEclipse with dual power supplies (PCs are black mambas on the Io).
Having an impression over the years of getting the best power cord that one can afford for all components, the rationale by the designer seems to be contradictory to my informed impressions. I mean this in a most positive way. If I can save a few dinero, euro, pounds, dollars, on my next splurge, that’s okay with me. What are your thoughts and experiences? BTW, getting ready to splurge on either sigma NR2 or alpha NR2 for my amps. Thnx. Last edited by audioquest4life; 03-05-2021 at 09:32 AM. |

Years ago, at the recommendation of an audiophile friend, I replaced the PLC that shipped with my VPI TNT turntable to an SDS. (I got a sweet deal on the SDS.) I made the upgrade because the SDS offered more precise control than the PLC and really didn't expect an audible difference. But - surprise! - I found it made a substantial improvement. Obviously that wasn't "placebo effect" at work. So I'm curious about cables on turntable power supplies.

I’ve tried several Shunyata power cords on my Avid Acutus Reference Power Supply. Initially, I was convinced that I heard improvement going from an Alpha NR to Sigma NR and even tried an Alpha NR v2. On Caelin’s advice, I tried the Venom Digital 14 and do not feel like I lost any sound quality. I’ve sold the other cords. As much as I wanted to believe that my upgraded power supply with 1000kva transformer would be better served with a low gauge power cord, I am pleased with the Venom Digital. The Venom Digital is also shielded which Caelin says also benefits turntable power supplies. As always, ymmv.

So glad I found this topic. Any developments for those who switched over to the Venom V14 digital or to another cord since the original post a few months ago? Did you keep it or change out to another cord. For the small investment on the Venom I’m also wanting to take Caelin’s advice. Interested in hearing from others.

What would explain a difference for a power cord to a turntable? CCI for the motor?

This is why the NR filter as located in the plug at the compent end, rather than at the power distributor end, because it works more effectively there. IIRC, this is why the "never connected to the AC mains" types of turntable power supplies, e.g. those from Michell, Rega, et. al. make a difference in the sound quality.
