Default Yesterday...

Went by the Toy Shop yesterday and found Dennis playing with a new 46 amp. Apparently he's figgered out a configuration to strap these up and run single ended, and they sound really nice. He's using a 6CG7/6DJ8 for the front end, but since I had some 396As on hand, along with the proper adapter, we tried those out.

He really liked the 396A, and ordered himself some adapters as well to play with. Last I saw him he was hooking up the 46 amp to his bench, chortling happily....

Well, Dennis says he likes this amp so much, he's going to build some for sale...

You heard it here first.

I've purchased a few "backup" tubes here and there (had a Mullard 5ar4 display a pleasing, brief lightning storm within it's glass not too long ago), and since the wife was out of town, I thought I'd sit down and audition every tube combination I have, and rate them. Interesting results:

Well, that's what the spec sheet says, although I believe Dennis said he was getting about 1.75W out of them....

Hey Guys, I just finished the chassis for the finalized (I really mean it this time) version of our new phono preamp.
I'll be meeting with the chassis fabricator to give him the drawings and discuss a few details.
The parts are on order and I'm having these first two units shot in our Red Illusion, then I'll get the faceplates made.
I had wanted to build a phono preamp for myself for a long time but I've have been so busy that I wasn't able to find the time.
So In dribs and drabs I gathered up mostly used parts, then modified a chassis that we couldn't use.
It took a long time to build, but I was very happy with the sound, so after listening to it for a month or so, and even though it was a little noisy, I gave it to Dennis to see what he thought of it.
He loved it, so I suggested we build them, and he agreed.
So I took two smaller chassis and separated the power supply from the preamp.
I'll keep you posted with updates and more pics.

What will be the tubes used in the phono preamp?
