It has been 20 years since I used the formula [Voltage gain in dB = 20 × log (V2 / V1)]. The chart is much easier.
Thanks |

As regards the bubble shown in the first post, the Fieckert software 'Adjust+' discussed in the referenced thread also uses a similar bubble (which they will sell you.) I t believe its use is as gauge of relative azimuth position rather than the final reckoning. Last edited by tima; 03-15-2014 at 03:55 AM. |

Since you only need to match the level between the channels the actual "volume" of the signal is not important. You need to get the same voltage reading for both channels. If the azimuth is not correct there will be a difference between channels. Try changing the azimuth in one direction and measure again. If the difference between channels is smaller you are in the right direction. If not change azimuth in the other direction. This take time and patience but you can reach perfect azimuth once you get the hang of it.

I have a new Classic 3 and now just venturing into fine tuning all the settings. I got the Analogue Productions Test LP and have just been playing around. If I understand it right the Azimuth test is simply a cross-talk test between channels. So, as an example, when you play the left-only track you shouldn't hear anything out of the right speaker. This would be ideal but unrealistic to get down to zero crosstalk I'm guessing. The advice is to minimize any sound coming from the "dead" channel, and get both channels to have matching levels of deadness.
So what I did is play the left channel track but turn off my left amp, then listened to the very faint tone coming from the right speaker. This is the crosstalk talking. I turned up the volume until I saw a little motion on the meter on my amp. This was still not loud but audible enough to mentally record it. Then I switched everything around and did this for the other channel. With the volume set to the same number on my preamp I was getting a slightly higher needle on my amp, and barely more noticeable volume. This all seems oh so close. I haven't tried any tweaking of the actual azimuth yet, and may not. This made me pretty happy that I'm probably in good shape on this setting. Would welcome feedback about this methodology, even if wrong. John

Mike.......Another alternative is to use the meters on your C2300 preamplifier. Using the left channel tone or the right channel tone from your test LP, raise the preamplifier volume until you have the meter indicating -40 dB with the tone playing. Now play the tone from the opposite channel. If your azimuth is correct the opposite channel meter should also read -40 dB. If there is a difference then adjust the azimuth until both channels are equal.

That's pretty much what I just did. Glad to see we're thinking alike Dan. Apparently I've read enough of your valuable posts that I've learned something!
