Anyone here with a decent analog rig ripping their vinyl to 24/96 using something like a Linestreamer+ which offers line level input into asynchronous USB ADC conversion?

Even better is the Ayre QA-9 ADC featured at CES2012. Aries Brown is the guy to look out for at CES2013! The senior design engineer may have something even better to show including a world clock interface & upgraded DACS.

Copyright law I don't know but surely it is important we protect the source... The musos and the music. That is the danger with the idea of copying and onselling media.

As music lovers we all have a vested interest in making sure that musicians other than the top 40 survive the age of file sharing. None of us are likely to be copy sin free but like most a commitment to regularly support the creators for the privilege of sharing in the gifts of the muse is more important than getting new gear IMO. I could maybe survive with second rate gear but not second rate music (will probably eat my words on that on the next upgrade).

Fortunately though we can have the best of all worlds as long as we also continue to buy albums regularly and value the work of the musicians (those other than Justin Beiber that is).

I completely agree. I've never felt it was right to not pay for music. That's why I own thousands of CD's, SACD's, HDTRACKS downloads and hundreds of LP's (it used to be over 1000 - then I sold some because I was constantly moving - now I'm buying them again!)

For me, it goes without saying, but when I buy music or a movie, I want to continue to have a choice of preferred media delivery. For me that preference Is vinyl, SACD & blue-ray. I don't want to be dictated to by some downstream service provider that there is now only one or two ways to listen to music & watch movies & for that privilege you have to jump a hoop by either making further payments for the same material and/or agreeing to divulge personal information as a matter of the transaction process.

Ultra-violet Blu-ray.....what do you think about that direction?

MyPal, My Ayre dealer has ripped a Vinyl collection using the QA9 ADC. I haven't heard but he says he has got good results.

I'm interested in knowing more on the new Ayre DAC you've mentioned.

Second, under the FAIR USE PROVISION of the Copywright Act, you are entitled rip the CD's and sell them later because the copies you made were lawful at the time of ripping (you owned the CD's).

So, you buy a CD, you can rip to your computer since you OWN the CD. You are then entitled to, under section 109 of the Copyright Act (First Sale Doctrine) to RESELL or give away the CD.

So....
You can rip a copy of the CD you own and purchased legally to your computer (legal).
You can sell a copy of the CD you own and purchased legally.
What you DON'T have the right to do is sell or redistribute copies of the music at any time (you don't possess distribution rights).

The issue of the files remaining on your computer after you sell the CD's has NOT been addressed because you cannot make it legal to rip the CD's and legal to sell them and then make it illegal in the middle. The law doesn't work that way.

That being said, I plan (for now) to keep all my CD's for fear of a crash or failure in my backup system.

.....This is definitely off topic....so let's get back to discussing how great both the K-03 and MCD1100 are.....
That is not correct. Once you give up the physical media you have no legal right to maintain a copy for your own purposes. A person who rips a CD has created a new copy for which no license exists when it is sold.

Getting back to the original OP's topic -- copying your legally purchased Cee Dee music and then selling the legally bought Cee Dee.

The quick and dirty answer is there has been no legal precedent in the courts or by the RIAA addressing this specifically and in reality there is no way to police any of it.

However, just because it cannot be policed, doesn't make it legal.

This excerpt from the RIAA pretty well summarizes what most believe the law is RIAA - The Law - December 30, 2012

Copying CDs

•It’s okay to copy music onto an analog cassette, but not for commercial purposes.
•It’s also okay to copy music onto special Audio CD-R’s, mini-discs, and digital tapes (because royalties have been paid on them) – but, again, not for commercial purposes.
•Beyond that, there’s no legal "right" to copy the copyrighted music on a CD onto a CD-R. However, burning a copy of CD onto a CD-R, or transferring a copy onto your computer hard drive or your portable music player, won’t usually raise concerns so long as:
•The copy is made from an authorized original CD that you legitimately own
•The copy is just for your personal use. It’s not a personal use – in fact, it’s illegal – to give away the copy or lend it to others for copying.

Happy Holidays Folks,

Bob
