I think a lot of people would say he was the greatest. He was a pioneer. Before Casals the Bach cello suites were thought to be unplayable. He was also a pretty good conductor. I like them all, but often I like the interpretations of Peirre Fournier. Jacqueline DuPre's version of the Elgar cello concerto could make a grown man cry.
