I love to hunt for new vinyl, post your vinyl gem stories
Today I picked up some gems for my collection. My wife said lets go "garbage picking" , our little private joke about going to flea markets. I sometimes find some vinyl treasures on occasion so I said sure. I admit I am a Beatles fan, not to the point of hanging pictures or anything crazy; I just like the music. I have the vinyl box set and the cd remasters and several versions of the Uk and US versions of several albums. My point is I don't need any more of the Beatles music but when I find something unusual and in mint condition and the seller wants to make a deal I can't resist. So I picked up a mint UK copy of HELP, THE BEATLES 1962-1966 on RED VINYL, RUBBER Soul. I also found a mint sealed copy of The Doors and a few other albums in mint condition . These records look and sound like (after I cleaned them) they were played maybe once to make a cassette copy and then put away. Lets hear about your vinyl treasure hunts. I also buy a lot of new viny and cd's as well which is gratifying in other ways… its all good

Many, many years ago, when I was a teenager, I had a copy of Tommy recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra on cassette. It featured all the members of the Who, Steve Winwood, Maggie Bell, Richie Havens, Rod Stewart, Ringo Starr, just to name a few (NOT to be confused with the movie soundtrack which sucked IMO). In the years since, all my cassettes had been discarded but I often missed that version of Tommy. About 8 or 9 years ago, I set out on a mission to find it but discovered it was out of release and next to impossible to find. I finally came across a used CD in excess of $100 but got it because I really wanted it. It was my understanding that the vinyl was even rarer.
Fast forward to about 2009. I was at a local record show and browsing through one of the bargain bins. You know, the cardboard box with "$3 or less" written on it in black magic marker. All of a sudden, there it was, the boxed vinyl set, complete with aria in about VG condition. It was marked at three bucks but the seller told me I could have it for two. I felt like a thief but waked out of there one happy camper. |

In 2010 I was in a second hand book store in Newtown Sydney which had two bins of records with 3 for $10 on it. I got a ziggy stardust first 1972 RCA press never played and Beatles 1980 MFSL press of magical mystery tour!! Not in the best condition but still played well. I still have the ziggy album today and my mate who is a vinyl fanatic has my MFSL on a long term loan, AKA I won't see it again, my best and only real score from bin diving!

I've been haunting used record stores for years and have found a large number of very rare "bargains". But since I collect mostly classical music and jazz, I really haven't looked for many Ziggy Stardust or Beatles favorites. The top nine LP's sold in Auction were by the Beatles, the Velvet Underground, and the Sex Pistols, with number 10 by Led Zeppelin. All of the top 10 sold for over $10,000 U.S.
I have found some extremely rare classical and jazz LP's though. One example is an RCA/Soria box set that I've read is the rarest RCA Living Stereo release, and has sold in auction (highest was on eBay) for up to $3,500 in near mint condition. I bought my copy at a used record store for $15.00 (Fifteen dollars U.S.) I think I'm going to put mine on eBay very soon!
