Is the ph6 compatible with a clearaudio MC?
Sorry I am new to phono stages and I can’t understand all the gain discussions in the forum. I currently have clearaudio active concept which has a built in preamp with MC cartridge running through bryston sp3 processor, 7b3 mono blocks and dynaudio C2 speakers. I am interested in tubes so I am thinking of buying a new ph6 which is in my price range of $3500
Is this a good match and an upgrade to what I have? Looking for some advice. Thanks

Unless there is a way to deactivate the Clearaudio active built-in pre, not really.

So, the OP would be good with a PH6 or most any other external preamp he might wish (like a Cary VT-500). From the owner's manual: 4) RCA OUTPUT Depending on the settings below, the corresponding signal will exit through the RCA outputs. -passive= Choose this setting for use with an external phono amplifier within your Hi-Fi setup instead of the integrated phono amplifier. The switch for Subsonic, Gain, Mode and the headphone output are deactivated in this setting. -variable= Choose this setting for the use of the integrated phono amplifier. The signal through the RCA outputs can now be adjusted with the Concept Activ volume control. The settings for Subsonic, Gain and Mode have to be also chosen correctly. This setting is perfect for the use of active speakers (without extra components). -active= Choose this setting for the use of the integrated phono amplifier. The signal will exit through the RCA outputs at full volume level. In this setting, the switches for Subsonic, Gain and Mode have to be set according to the installed phono cartridge. The volume control of the concept active will affect the headphone output only. This setting is perfect for use with a separate hifi amplifier.

Yes I should have stated that I can bypass the pre-amp on the clearaudio with a simple switch. I was more wondering the the ph6 is a good match for it.

Not really the TT/TA that needs to match. Is more the cartridge that needs to be matched to the capabilities of the preamp. With the PH6 and its fixed gain of 58db you should be just fine with most MC carts other than the lowest of LOMCs, where you might need to turn the volume on your preamp up a bit. Should be a nice intro to tubes.
