Dave.......This is a very educational video on safes. Worth the time to watch. The part that deals with hand gun storage and bedside storage begins at 22:00 minutes. Watch the entire video if you have time.

Dan / Steve,
I got thinking with regards to the Fort Knox pistol safe all the demos were shown in a well lighted environment .. I'm wondering how well the operation would be under the cover of darkness ?? |

Dave.......Like anything that involves manual dexterity you will have to practice often and develop muscle memory so that the button combination becomes second nature and not something you need to dwell on before putting it into action. Select one combination, don't ever change it, and practice the input in light and darkness often. Under stress and adrenaline you do not want to have to remember anything, you want it to be automatic. The same is true about your weapon. Practice often to keep muscle memory embedded. When it is time to act there will be little time to think.

Why I don't like the fingerprint model: it can take a couple swipes to get it to open and there can be a little hesitation. If you just washed your hands or they're sweaty it may not work well for a couple minutes. I programmed fingers on both hands just in case. What's nice is you may forget a code, but you won't forget your finger. Why I like the fort knox pistol box style: It doesn't use batteries, it's still very fast, it's heavier made and feels more teenager proof, it's more reliable than my fingerprint box. Quite a few companies make this style like AMSEC and Titan and I think they all use the same lock mechanism. |

I'll throw my 2 cents in here also... I'm sure there are some well made biometric gun safes but the fact is that no matter how reliable an electronic lock is designed to be, there is still the heightened risk of failure. A failure when you need your gun the most could be life threatening. Obviously, a simple battery failure or a failure of the device to open due to a recognition error would be the most likely problem scenarios. However, what if the electronic device fails the other way, that is to say open. Is it likely? No. Is it possible? Yes! Moreover, a natural or man-made electromagnetic event can also cause electronic locks to fail closed. I want to know I can absolutely get to my guns when I need to and exclude all unauthorized access. My vote is for mechanical safe locks that work now, or 50 years from now.
