Stradivari's Genius: a good read
Prompted by BlueChiaro's recounting his experience at a recent Philadelphia Orchestra concert, where one Ms. Arabella Steinbacher (alas I am not on a first name basis) duly impressed Robert with her playing of her Strad, I wanted to share with you all an interesting book: Stradivari's Genius.
The author discusses the other Cremonese makers and designers, including Guarneri and Amati, and some of the technical reasons why Strads sound so good - construction theories, wood, and of course the varnishes. Just as interesting to me is the history - he traces the provenance of 5 violins and one cello though centuries of owners, dealers, and museums. Those who own (or play) one of these really are caretakers for the next generation. Thanks for the info (and the credit )...sounds like an interesting read. I think I'm already at my two book limit from the JohnK library, though...
