What manual?
I just unboxed it.. placed it on the rack, hooked up an Ethernet cable and then added it to my Roon devices. I did have to run Konfig to set it to variable output but that was it. Here's my 2 cents - I have always baulked at the cost of the last Linn Klimax. Not that they don't sound good. But I guess I have conscious bias that it is still using an off the shelf AKM DAC inside. But within a few seconds of trying out this demo, I knew it was special. It retains the richness and warmth that Linn is known for.. but there is also that resolving ability to hear individual instruments - whether it is part of a multi-track recording or a section in the orchestra. I first noticed this on my EMM Labs.. the Playback Designs and also the PS Audio, and now the latest Linn Klimax. That combination of resolving detail and layers plus the warmth makes for a goosebumps combination. Makes me forget about the system and just concentrate on the music and the experience.

And you're right, it is not a server; in fact, it does not have place to add a hard drive so that it could function as a server, like the Aurender N20 does. It is a combination steamer/DAC. You'd have to take stuff like that up with them; I'm just a Contributing Writer, and not part of the actual staff as an employee, so I only get paid once the issue is actually published, distributed for sale, and hits the shelves, so to speak. I don't have any control or input over the layout, photos, what they say on the cover, or any of that stuff. Just the review, and in some cases, that is cut back by the Editors, e.g. my Fidata HFAS-1 review, which was edited down quite bit (probably because my review was over 4000 words! Doh!). Cheers.

It’s a great review Stephen. I have the previous version (Katalyst) and have thought about upgrading, but since I use a preamp and Roon, I just can’t bring myself (yet[emoji41]) to pay for the knob, the ADC, the pins, and all the other preamp functions that I would have no use for - all that bling and those functions going to waste.

It's really a superb-sounding DAC, and its really handy that it has an Ethernet port for making connection directly to a network to function as a streamer, etc. You know, what I'm most surprised by is that it doesn't have a "slot" for adding an internal SSD drive. Then, it could function as a true server/streamer/DAC. And a fabulous one at that. But all the other stuff you mention, e.g. the knob, ADC, the pins, preamp functions, etc. are features and functions that I personally have no use for, either. Other folks MMV, of course. BTW, it also has an optical SFP port, but I could never figure out how to get it to work using an optical transceiver in the SFP port. If I did, I could have by-passed the EtherREGEN entirely and run an optical fiber cable from my music server directly to it via OM-1 fiber. The fact it has...no frickin' manual () did not help with with that, either.

Stephen, how does the new Klimax DSM/3 sound compared to the older Klimax DSM/2?
My self imposed budget doesn't allow me to buy the "latest and greatest" brand new stuff, so I tend to look back a generation. If the DSM/2 was say 90% as good as the replacement, I'm more than happy saving my $$$
