gbaby, I should probably listen again. I may be missing a sense of ambience derived surround can add. Had I not had the JC 2 before the SP-3, I'm sure I would use the SP-3 as processor and preamp.

Please do, but just use all SP3. I play all my two channel PCM 44/16 music from CDs I import as .aiff files to USB drives for the Bryston BDP3. I have a BDA3 D/A converter but always prefer to listen to 7.1 from the SP3 in either Dolby Pro Logic Iix music or Stereo7.1 over 2 channel from the BDA3. So does everyone else who have heard it in my setup. My speakers were designed by a KEF engineer and are very neutral.

I'm doing an HT setup in which an Oppo 205 sends HDMI to the SP3. The SP3 distributes balanced front LR to Ayre KX-5 by-pass inputs. The KX-5 distributes balanced mono to a Velodyne SMS-1 bass manager. I assume the front LR speakers should be set to large in the SP3 menu so the full bandwidth is passed to the KX-5 and onto the forth order 80 Hz crossover of the SMS-1, is that correct?
Unfortunately, I haven't figured out a way to use inputs to the SMS-1 from both the KX-5 and SP3, because both are active simultaneously for HT and surround music. The reason for going through the KX-5 is that it links to a VX-5 that drives the KEF Ref 1s. For stereo a QX-5 receives files from Roon via ethernet and passes analog through the KX-5 and VX-5 to the Ref 1s. |

IIRC, a You Tube presentation by a PS Audio guy re sub woofer setup. If it ain't true, it makes sub woofer connection better for me because I can use XLR cables.

I've been reading about LFE on the internet, and now I'm more confused than ever about which inputs/outputs of the SMS-1 I should use. It appears that both the XLR and RCA inputs are labeled LFE, but there are XLR and RCA outputs labeled LFE and an RCA pair labeled equalized for an accessary kit (whatever that is). I had assumed the SMS-1 was low-passing the full range audio sent to it as well as doing acoustic room correction.

Since my last post on this matter, things have changed. Heretofore, I have been importing all my CDs using iTunes. However, I experimented with dbpoweramp in order to get cover art, and to my surprised, it bettered iTunes sonically in importing .aiff files as well as wav files making the music have better dynamic range, better stereo imaging as well a overall slam. The music sounds like an analog album. So now I am in the process of reimporting all my CDs and I am getting cover art too. I cannot believe the improvements in sound so now I am listening mostly to two channels using the Bryston BDA3.
