I had that same thought before I got my C50. The C50 has a nice DAC for me to use now and a GREAT preamp for later when I upgrade DAC.

There is some truth to that, but proper design can minimize power supply issues.

Kudos to MA7000. A really great integrated amp! Although, you should have very very good reasons downsizing from that combo you already have. Don't try invent the wheel twice. The C48 and MC252 is a keeper!

Can't imagine that one could hear the difference between the C48's 32/192 DAC and something that one could consider an upgrade at some later date. So the would consider the future DAC issue as moot. While am very happy with my MA6600 and think I would also be happy with an MA7000, given the choice I would go with the C48/MC252 due to its flexibility. If you want to upgrade, try an MC452.

Shoot, the C48 drivers don't actually work properly for USB at this point. Can't imagine not wanting to upgrade at a later date? Future DAC tech. is the furthest thing from "moot." In fact, other than the transport itself, no other component's technology is changing faster. There are valid reasons for wanting separates. Future DACs being moot is not one of them.

You misunderstood me. I did not say that there would not be faster/denser DACs in the future.......... indeed, if you are willing to pay for them there are 48/384(?) and faster DACs out there that have yet to be adopted to audio. I'm saying that one cannot hear the difference. While I'm no fan of 'blind' listening tests, DACs is one place that they would likely work well. Or, perhaps that is just the luddite in me.

Indeed, every DAC that I have listened to has had its own sonic signature. The C48 is a lovely preamplifier, but it is most certainly not the final word in audible DAC improvements.

I am just about to reach my bottom line on the issue of integrated amplifiers vs. separate preamps and amplifiers, and, just so you know and understand my strong personal feelings on the issue . . .
The main reason I've not purchased separate components, or that I have not made plans to improve anything of any consequence in my system lies in two separate and very distinct areas . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Here is another "I think". If one has to down size, the MA7000 surely will not be a disappointment. It has a good amount of power, and sounds great. Also there are lots of connection options and it is a very attractive piece of equipment. It is really easy to add an external DAC at anytime as was already mentioned. The prices are coming down and the quality is getting really good. Now me, prior to my current system, I had a MA6100 years ago and then moved up to a 6200 which I really liked. It has only been about two years since moving into separates for the first time. There are a lot more dollars involved with going with separates as everyone knows. I guess I am more of a gear head, and like looking at all those boxes that have the green McIntosh logo on them. I have a picture of Ivan's Cape Cod room in my desk drawer at work if I need a quick fix.
