Cayman S
While getting my C4S serviced yesterday, I had some time to take the '09 Cayman S with PDK for a spin. The salesman took me to some quiet local roads that had blind S turns and steep elevation changes to really get a feel for the "balance" of the car and the handling prowess.
I've never really paid much attention to the Cayman before but I have to say, I was very impressed with the new motor (320HP) and in combination with the fast shifting PDK that even blips the throttle on downshifts, the car is loads of fun! I could not do any better with a 6 speed myself, especially on twisting roads like that. Evidently no one can either as PDK is faster than a 6 speed manual gearbox. Even though the Cayman is down on HP as compared to the Carrera, the Cayman is just shy of 3000lbs and HP/Weight ratio is really not bad. The car accelerated well past the 70 MPH mark coming out of the turns in a blink of an eye with the PDK banging out fast and crisp upshifts that do not delay the forward momentum as the interior cabin was filled with the wail of the mid engine right behind the seats. This car is serious FUN!!! I love my C4S but in many ways the Caymans S was even more fun on those twisties. The car's balance and handling is also superb albeit the steering is just a bit too light for my taste but it is not a big deal. The Cayman feels a bit more neutral and at ease being thrown around where the Carrera relies more heavily on the shear grip of the wide rear tires, the heavy rear weight bias and electronic stability control. I've gotten used to "timing" the exits of the turns while loading up the rear of the Carrera for maximum traction but the Cayman feels like it doesn't need the extra help and I felt like I could carry a bit more speed through the turns. Fun car indeed and carries a lower price tag. PS. The salesman was awfully quiet after the ride..... I don't blame him, I wouldn't feel comfortable with someone driving aggressively when I don't know the skill level or lack thereof of the person either. Last edited by PHC1; 08-12-2009 at 09:12 PM. |

The Cayman is a very sexy car--it really grips the road and it's a very enjoyable ride.

The Cayman S is an incredible car. Mid-engine balance is hard to beat; however, when you exceed the limits it is very punishing. Swapping ends happens in the blink of an eye! Adding a front-end splitter should cure any light feeling so long as you make sure that the tail doesn’t get too light. Over-steer may be fast but it’s a hand-full to drive.

Absolutely, but it's not immune. When it lets go it's quick. My turbo was much lazier when it stepped out.
