Smile My Impression of my new 2.5 and boy did I Do a dumb thing.

Again a thanks to Mr. Tanner for the quick delivery of my 2.5 amp. I've had the Bryston for about 9 days and expected some break in. However until this morning it sounded under powered. Like a car w/it's emergency break on. Also no bass what so ever. I had to get my preamp up to 50% to get any listenable audio. The gain was at 29. At that point I rolled my eyes and put on my dunce cap. I discovered the amp was set at mono!!! Well I hit the switch and OMG the music came alive. Vocals clean and realistic. Great top end excellent detail and a very nice and tuneful bottom end. Plenty of power for my Aerial 6's. I'm also using the Balanced outputs in my HT processor. This eliminates the HT pass through on my Audio Research. It saves the tubes from being on during a movie. Now that all the switches are in the correct position I'd have to say I'm really enjoying the music. The Bryston and my Audio Research SP-16 go very well together. Anyone else have an Audio Research/Bryston combo??

I've not heard the combo, but AR tube preamps DO pair well with good solid state amps. So, it makes sense that the AR/Bryston combo would sound great!

Hi Forte

WHEW! - glad you found the problem. Did the amp come with the switch in the MONO position?

What is the efficiency rating of your speaksers. With my gain set at -29db, I get appreciable volume, and I'm only using an amp which measures approximately 20wpc of Class A power.

Yes it did. But my fault sometimes we look but don't see. All is well and I'm loving the music.

The 6's are 6 ohm at 86db. Power requirements are 50-250 watts at 8 ohms. This little Bryston has really opened up my speakers over the entire range.

That's a pretty difficult load.

Before the current Aerial T series came out this was Aerials most efficient speaker. I had talked to Michael Kelly about a year ago at a local event in NH and he told me that 100 wpc would be fine for the 6. This new 2.5 Amp I have has provided a big improvement to the overall sound. Just a guess but Bryston may be a bit conservative on their power ratings.
